Ingredients

  • 2 C. cake flour (sifted)
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/2 C. Crisco® All-Vegetable Shortening
  • 1 C. sugar
  • 1 tsp. Spice Islands® Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 C. milk
  • 1/4 C. Grandma’s® Molasses
  • 1 tsp. Spice Islands® Ground Saigon Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F for a tube cake, or 350°F for a 9x9x2-inch cake.
  2. Sift together flour, salt and cream of tartar.
  3. Cream together shortening, sugar and vanilla. Beat in eggs.
  4. Add milk alternately with flour mixture. Beat 1/2 minute.
  5. Place 1/3 of batter in a small bowl; stir in molasses and spices.
  6. Pour light and dark batters alternately into a well-greased, lightly floured 8-inch tube cake pan or into a 9x9x2-inch pan.
  7. Bake tube cake for 1 hour at 325˚F or the 9x9x2-inch cake 45 minutes in 350˚F.
  8. Frost as desired.
