Aztec Brownies

Ingredients

Brownies

  • 2 C. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 C. brown sugar
  • 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1/4 C. cocoa powder
  • 1 C. butter OR margarine
  • 1 C. water
  • 1/2 C. buttermilk
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp. Clabber Girl® Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp. Spice Islands® Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. Spice Islands® Ground Nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. Spice Islands® Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 tsp. Spice Islands® Pure Almond Extract

For the Icing:

  • 1/2 C. butter OR margarine
  • 1/3 C. buttermilk
  • 1/4 C. cocoa powder
  • 4 C. powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. Spice Islands® Pure Vanilla Extract, pure
  • 1/2 tsp. Spice Islands® Almond Extract
  • 1/2 C. sliced OR slivered almonds

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350º F.
  2. Combine flour and sugars in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Set aside.
  4. Bring cocoa, butter and water to a boil in a small saucepan.
  5. Pour hot mixture over flour and sugar; stir to mix thoroughly.
  6. Mix buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, spices and extracts in a smaller bowl.
  7. Add to chocolate batter and mix well.
  8. Pour into a greased 15 x 10-inch jelly roll pan, and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
  9. To make the icing, combine the butter, buttermilk and cocoa in a medium saucepan; bring to a boil.
  10. Remove from heat and gradually stir in powdered sugar and extracts.
  11. Beat until smooth and spread over hot brownies.
  12. Sprinkle almonds evenly over top of icing.
