Old Fashioned Apple Dumplings

Ingredients

Dumplings: 

  • 2 C. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. Clabber Girl® Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 C. Crisco® All-Vegetable Shortening
  • 2/3 C. milk
  • 6 baking apples
  • 1/3 C. sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. Spice Islands® Ground Saigon Cinnamon
  • 3 tsp. butter or margarine
  • 1/4 C. Milk

Sweet & Sour Sauce:

  • 2 C. water
  • 1/3 C. vinegar
  • 1/3 C. butter
  • 3 Tbsp. Clabber Girl® Corn Starch
  • 1/8 tsp. Spice Islands® Ground Nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. Spice Islands® Ground Saigon Cinnamon
  • 1 C. sugar

Directions

Dumplings:

  1.  Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt, cut in shortening.
  3. Stir in milk; mix until soft dough is formed.
  4. Knead 4 strokes, roll to 1/8” thickness.
  5. Cut into 6 squares.
  6. Core and peel apples, placing one on each square.
  7. Combine sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle into center of each apple, adding 1/2 tsp. butter to each. Moisten edges of dough; press corners up over apples and brush with milk.
  8. Place in greased baking pan and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

Sauce: 

  1. Heat water, vinegar and butter in a saucepan.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients.
  3. Stir into hot mixture; cook over low heat, stirring constantly until thickened.
  4. Pour sauce over hot apple dumplings. Makes 6 servings.
